John was born in Munsbarth-Hessen, Germany (according to to M. Dunlap) in April of 1834. He came to the US about 1852. John worked on the old Suspension Bridge (near the site of the current Rainbow Bridge}. He learned the blacksmith trade working on the bridge, and later setup a blacksmith shop at 854 Washington Street, NW corner of Virginia, in Buffalo, NY. He lived at 857 Washington Street and later 35 East Ferry.
